Taylor Ashton, Quantity Surveyor
Current Team/location: Central Team, Project Hauata
As a young female in construction, this wasn’t in Taylor’s original career plan. Initially embarking on a degree in Accounting, Taylor decided that wasn’t for her and went about investigating alternative career paths, eventually discovering Quantity Surveying – and the rest is history.
Graduating with a Diploma in Construction – Quantity Surveying from Wintec, it wasn’t long until Taylor joined the Central Hawkins team and has now been with us for over 5 years. “It was the best thing I’ve ever done” says Taylor. “I joined Hawkins because they are the leading commercial construction company in New Zealand and with that comes a lot of opportunities and room to grow.”
But what does the role of a Quantity Surveyor actually involve? She tells us “Each day is different, but the main responsibilities involve managing subcontractors accounts and contracts, while pricing variations for the client.” Not stopping there Taylor also gets to learn from the top people in the Construction industry; “I get to learn how to negotiate, solve complex issues and maximize profit from the best – which is really inspiring but it’s the team environment that I enjoy the most about working for Hawkins.”
Having already worked on two of our high profile projects including The University of Waikato’s “The Pa” and Project Hauata, be home to ACC, the skies the limit for Taylor who has her sights set on “becoming a Commercial Manager one day.” We’re looking forward to supporting Taylor and seeing her career flourish!
