When Quantity Surveyor (QS), Tyler Watkins left school at 18, she like many school leavers had no idea what she wanted to be or do – but what she did know was that she was really organized, and her skills would be put to good use in a office based role of some sort.
As a young female in construction, this wasn’t in Taylor’s original career plan. Initially embarking on a degree in Accounting, Taylor decided that wasn’t for her and went about investigating alternative career paths, eventually discovering Quantity Surveying - and the rest is history.
“I wanted to join Hawkins because they had the best projects going in the city at the time like the Auckland Art Gallery project, the Britomart Westpac buildings above the downtown train station, and also the Auckland Museum project.”
James Walton started out as a labourer, and after completing one year of an Engineering Degree at the University of Canterbury reconsidered his options and switched his focus to Quantity Surveying. We caught up with James to find out more about his road to construction:
My career with Hawkins began in 1999, whEn I joined as a labourer, leading to an apprenticeship, working my way up to my current role as a senior site manager. The team culture and collaborative working environments really sets Hawkins apart – If you’re looking for a career that surrounds you with great people, challenges you daily and provides the opportunity to grow - then jump in head first.
Hawkins has a great culture and I’ve met so many amazing people during my time here who I now have the privilege to call friends. You’re constantly surrounded by experienced people, who are always willing to offer support when you need it
I joined Hawkins 17 years ago as an apprentice and have worked my way up to Site Manager. From my apprenticeship and HSE courses to Tertiary education and in-house training, I’m grateful to Hawkins for investing so much time into my development. I love working on the wide variety of interesting projects, with a range of people from different walks of life.
