Senior Quantity Surveyor, Ashleigh Kennedy joined Hawkins 10 years ago, having previously worked with us through a subcontractor.

Having always had a passion for the trades, she says, “construction offers so many different job options with good remuneration.

“Every day is different!” She continues, “one day you could be reviewing plans and specifications, measuring and pricing building works, and carrying out health and safety inspections on-site, to working with the delivery team on building methodologies and engaging with clients, consultants – the list goes on and on.”

Having previously gained a National Diploma in Quantity Surveying, Ashleigh hasn’t stopped learning since joining us, she says “I’ve been offered a considerable amount of training during my time at Hawkins and my career goals have always been supported.

“From undertaking the W.I.L.D (Women in Leadership Downer) course to being part of Hawkins Inspiring Leadership Programme where I gained a New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management), it’s been great taking part in all of these opportunities and definitely helped me to progress my career.”

But what keeps her so loyal to Hawkins? She tells us, “We [Hawkins] have a great culture and there’s a huge amount of experienced people who are more than happy to offer support when you need it. I’ve met so many amazing people, many of whom I now have the privilege to call friends.”

Since welcoming her children, Ashleigh has also had to balance a full-time job with being a full-time Mum “Hawkins has enabled me to work with flexibility so I can make work fit with my life, not the other way around” she says proudly “being a parent, it’s not always easy juggling full-time work and kids but I’m lucky that I’m supported by an organization that looks after employees wellbeing.”

Her final words of wisdom for those who are thinking about joining the construction industry? “Do it” she says, “there are plenty of career options and opportunities out there. Every day is different – you’ll never get bored, you’ll never stop learning and you get to work with a great bunch of people from all walks of life.”
